VBT figures week 46

Prices soar for vine tomatoes, strawberries, and head lettuce

The average price per kilogram of vine tomatoes continues to rise. At the end of week 46, the median price reached €2.18. Loose tomatoes, meanwhile, stabilized at €1.27 per kilogram. Both vine and loose tomato prices remain above last year's levels and the five-year average.

This trend does not extend to cucumbers at the auctions of the Federation of Belgian Horticultural Cooperatives. The price for cucumbers dropped slightly last week, bringing the unit price to €0.432. Some growers, including those at BelOrta, have already begun using artificial lighting to support their crops.

The price for head lettuce surged again last week, continuing a trend of elevated prices throughout the autumn. The current unit price stands at €1.10. Recent storms in Spain have severely impacted the iceberg lettuce harvest, benefiting greenhouse growers. According to Boerenbond's market update, this has led to an "exceptional price spike" for head lettuce and varieties like Rossa and Bionda, now priced around €1 per head. However, corn salad has not seen similar gains, with its price at €3.50 per kilogram. Improved prices are anticipated as the holiday season approaches.

Strawberry prices have also sharply increased, with the average price reaching €9.81 per kilogram at the end of week 46.
