Exports on the rise for Rimini-based company Bernardi

Italian fennel popular in Germany and northern Europe

"Our fennel exports to Germany have already doubled," states Christopher Bernardi from Bernardi srl in Rimini, emphasising that "our produce, which is grown in Romagna and boasts zero residue, is receiving a lot of praise by some German big retail chains."

Harvesting operations on the farm owned by Bernardi started almost a month ago and will continue until the first week of December. "The quality of the product is excellent, but unfortunately yields are lower than expected because, in recent weeks, we were affected by a flood that compromised part of the harvest."

In addition to fennel, Bernardi is also currently commercialising brassicas. "We have ample availability of cabbage, Savoy cabbage, white cauliflower, broccoli, and black cabbage, just to name the main ones. As for packaging, we can prepare all kinds of solutions depending on customer needs."

Brassicas will be available until April or early May, depending on seasonal trends. "Unfortunately, it is increasingly difficult to plan in the medium term due to a number of reasons. Among them, the weather can cause irreparable damage at any time. As previously mentioned, a couple of months ago we suffered unexpected flooding due to torrential rains, which led to a 30-40% drop in quantity yields. Luckily quality was not affected."

On a broader market front, Bernardi describes its trend as "like a roller coaster. Prices were through the roof in October because there was a shortage. Now the situation has normalised, in fact they are perhaps below expectations, considering that we have to deal with major production drops."

The company's own leeks are also available for the domestic and foreign markets

All of Bernardi's productions are zero residue, and labelled La Bella Stagione. "La Bella Stagione," explains technical manager Francesco Fabbri, "includes a selection of products with pesticide residues always below the limit of 0.01mg/kg, certified by DNV-GL. Products with this mark are fully Italian, and the traceability of the Bernardi chain is guaranteed in compliance with standard ISO 22005."
