Challenges for the future take center stage at Interpom 2024

From Sunday, November 24, to Tuesday, November 26, the Kortrijk Xpo hosted Interpom 2024, uniting 330 exhibitors from 15 countries for three days of intensive networking and discussions. The potato industry fair, renowned for its focus on innovation and sustainability, exceeded expectations with a record-breaking turnout of over 20,000 visitors from 50 countries.

The event was widely regarded as a resounding success. Although approximately 20,000 visitors from 50 countries were anticipated, the final attendance far surpassed these projections. "Potatoes remain a flagship product of the Belgian food industry—whether fresh, as chips, or as crisps. We are known for it, and this event showcased that once again. You can always observe a clear difference in the days. Sunday was very much a family day, with prams scattered across the aisles and growers enjoying a social drink. Monday was by far the busiest, being the day professionals traditionally choose to visit. Tuesday, as usual, was the quietest day for closing the event. All in all, we are pleased with how the event unfolded. Interpom continues to be one of the best fairs for gauging the sector's sentiment and fostering dialogue," commented exhibitors on the show floor.

"The wet spring and late harvest, challenges with cut seed potatoes, disease pressure, evolving potato prices, MAP7, industrial capacity growth, sector business developments, water scarcity, the phasing out of plant protection products, and, of course, the weather in general." This was the comprehensive list of topics outlined by Christophe Vermeulen, CEO of Belgapom, ahead of the event. "At Interpom, the entire sector is represented. Let's use these three days to engage with each other and explore ways to strengthen the industry collectively. The sustainable transition is accelerating. From growers to retailers, everyone must participate," he stated.

This sentiment was embraced throughout the fair. Over the three days, panel discussions tackled various critical topics, including the future of potato cultivation, leveraging data and technology, and finding solutions for water management. These themes were also echoed on the exhibition floor, which was consistently bustling with activity at the booths of potato traders and major processors. Much attention was focused on the anticipated contract prices, which are typically announced at the beginning of the fair but were delayed this year, sparking widespread speculation. The lively atmosphere was enhanced by the abundant flow of beer, which fueled spirited conversations throughout the event.

Overall, the event was considered highly successful, as evidenced by the large crowds and the frequent struggle of visitors to find parking near the venue. "We are growing every year," Christophe noted, hinting at the possibility of expansion for future editions to accommodate the increasing demand.

The next edition of Interpom will take place in 2026 on November 29, 30, and December 1 at the Kortrijk Xpo.
