LeaderBrand's sweet corn, cultivated on the East Cape, is set to hit supermarket shelves ahead of schedule this year, thanks to an exceptionally hot and dry spring. The initial corn fields, planted in early August, were initially projected to reach maturity around Christmas week. However, the favorable conditions have accelerated the growth cycle, allowing for an earlier harvest.
Gordon McPhail, General Manager of Farming at LeaderBrand, noted the optimal weather conditions for sweet corn cultivation this season. "This spring, the weather is breaking records on the East Cape, which has been perfect for our corn and melon crops. The high temperature and long days are perfect for creating creamy corn packed with sweetness," McPhail stated.
Despite reduced reliance on irrigation in recent years, the current season has necessitated its constant use, underscoring the team's dedication to crop management. McPhail also highlighted the consumer preference for sweet corn, which often surpasses strawberries in popularity upon its store arrival.
LeaderBrand's commitment to quality is evident in its meticulous hand-harvesting process, aimed at ensuring the selection of cobs at peak maturity and quality. Following harvest, the corn is promptly chilled in a forced air-cooling facility to preserve freshness. McPhail advises consumers to look for dark green husks, full and round cobs, and golden brown tassels as indicators of quality.
Carmel Ireland from 5 + A Day champions corn as a nutritious addition to the diet, rich in fiber, folate, and vitamin C. Its appeal to families and contribution to a diverse vegetable intake is emphasized. With the early arrival of LeaderBrand sweet corn grown in Gisborne, consumers have the opportunity to enjoy this seasonal favorite sooner than expected.
