The innovative umbrella structure designed by Combimetal Carrera is ideal for kiwifruit and can guarantee total coverage of the plants thanks to its special shape, as well as greater ventilation, completely protecting the crop and its root system, keeping it dry, with optimal consequences in terms of production and quality.
"We did not want to only stop at solutions designed for small fruits with the design and launch on the market of above-ground plants of up to 3 rows, but we sought to make significant changes in the construction of cover structures, which can now be seen in many Italian regions, offering farmers a novelty in the field of greenhouse production. An innovation designed with both phytopathological problems and the introduction and expansion of yellow and red-fleshed cultivars in mind," explained Antonio Carrera, founder of Combimetal Carrera, a company based in Policoro (Matera) boasting over 30 years of experience in the processing and manufacturing of steel structures, especially greenhouse structures.
The system installed by the company has a height at the ridge of 3.90 m and an arch of 4.8 m. It is made entirely of 33, 50 and 60 mm hot-dip galvanised steel tubes and 6 and 10 mm cables, 1.95 m high from the ground, which are required for scaffolding and therefore for tying the branches. The structure is solid and equipped with four lateral braces - 2 and 2.5 m long - for each arch. "Climatic conditions are created within the structure that ensure faster growth and development of plants already in the first 12 months. The fruits do not touch each other in as they grow and harvesting operations are facilitated. Our structure is solid and able to withstand the load of both thermoplastic films and nets."
