Mexico will continue to be the world's leading avocado exporter

A joint analysis by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) projects that Mexico will retain its dominant position in the global avocado export market, with a 53% share by 2033. This is attributed to a 3.6% annual increase in production and rising demand, mainly from the United States. Avocado is expected to surpass mangoes and pineapples, becoming the most traded tropical fruit by 2025.

Demand from the United States and the European Union is expected to be driven by the perceived health benefits of the fruit, with global imports estimated at 46% and 25% respectively by 2033. In addition, imports from the United Kingdom, Canada, China, and certain Middle Eastern countries are expected to increase significantly, driven by rising incomes and changes in consumer preferences. In parallel, per capita avocado consumption is expected to increase in producing countries such as Colombia, the Dominican Republic, and Indonesia, correlating with income growth.

Ramón Paz, an agricultural specialist, projects that Mexico will export 1,164,040 tons of avocado to the US in the 2024-2025 season, i.e. 10% more than in the 2023-2024 period, and 1,431,969 tons by 2029-2030. Data Mexico reported that in July 2024, Mexican avocado exports amounted to 341 million dollars. Michoacan de Ocampo, Jalisco, and Mexico City were the states with the highest sales. The Agricultural Food and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP) reported that the country produced 2,973,344.42 tons of avocado in the 2023 perennial cycle.
