The Egyptian chili pepper season is progressing well, with solid demand from several European markets despite Egypt not being particularly known for its peppers. This is according to Mohamed Awwad, a growing exporter and CEO of Al Awwad for Import and Export.
Awwad says, "We are seeing an improvement in demand for our chilies this season, so much so that our export forecasts have doubled compared to last season. The Egyptian origin for this product is growing by leaps and bounds, and we're accompanying this with an increase in acreage and the adoption of the varieties most in demand in Europe, such as Eye Bird Chili and Kardoula."
Egyptian chili peppers are being adopted in several European markets, adds the grower: " Currently, there is strong demand from Italy and the Netherlands. In second place, we also export to Germany, the UK, and France, and we're seeing the first signs of interest from buyers in Eastern Europe. This demand concerns fresh peppers and canned ones such as sliced jalapeno, cherry peppers, and kardoula in brine."
According to Awwad, when it comes to peppers, Egyptian origin has been overtaken by the competition from Morocco and Turkey because of its record of quality and pesticide MRLs. "Egyptian chili peppers were not preferred in Europe because of quality and pesticide residues, and we inherited this common image. However, at Al Awwad for import and export, we have planted our own production and have complete control over compliance with European regulations. The market is rewarding us and we are very optimistic for this season and for the future of the industry in Egypt."
"We ship with fast track via Koper for example, or with RO-RO service from Damietta to Treista, so our chili takes one week from Egypt to any destination in Europe," Awwad continues.
"The Egyptian chili peppers season usually continues until March, but can be extended this season until May, with prices on average 10% higher than last season," he concludes.
