Himachal Pradesh expects rain and snowfall, bringing hope for apple growers amid drought

Himachal Pradesh anticipates rain and snowfall in the upcoming days, offering prospects for apple growers amid a prolonged dry period. The Meteorological Center Shimla forecasts light to moderate rainfall in lower hilly and plain areas, with snowfall in middle and high-altitude regions on January 31, February 1, 3, 4, and 5. Despite this, the state faces a severe rainfall deficit, with January showing 82% less precipitation than average.

Recent snowfall occurred in Rohtang, Kinnaur, and the high peaks of Kullu, causing temperatures to drop. Maximum temperatures at several locations were 3-4 degrees Celsius below normal. Shimla experienced sunny weather with partial cloud cover.

The ongoing dry conditions concern farmers and apple growers who depend on winter precipitation for crop health. Apple orchards in high-altitude areas like Kinnaur, Kotgarh, and Rohru need sufficient snowfall for adequate chilling hours. The absence of snow could affect apple production in the next season.

Himachal Pradesh has seen a substantial shortfall in rainfall this season. From January 1 to January 30, the state recorded only 14.7 mm of rainfall, against the normal 82.3 mm. District-wise deficits include Bilaspur at 94%, Kangra at 93%, Kinnaur at 92%, Chamba at 85%, Shimla at 81%, and Lahaul-Spiti at 73%. Farmers and horticulturists are hopeful that upcoming snowfall will replenish soil moisture and enhance water availability for crops.

The tourism sector is also monitoring the weather, as snowfall in destinations like Kufri, Manali, and Dalhousie could attract visitors, potentially boosting the local economy.
