Avocado is Colombia’s second most exported fruit

Colombia's Hass avocado is going through its best market moment, consolidating itself as one of the country's most profitable agricultural products. In 2024, exports surpassed $300 million, increasing by 54.3% over 2023.

This fruit has become an important pillar in Colombian exports. The numbers speak for themselves. The Valle del Cauca region's avocado exports tripled in one year, with China as its main destination. The region's exports went from $17 million in 2023 to more than $50 million in 2024. Exports from Antioquia increased by 42.1% between 2023 and 2024, going from $83.1 million to $118.1 million, according to calculations by Analdex, the foreign trade agency, based on data from customs.

Exports from Risaralda increased by 37.9%, going from $64.2 million in 2023 to $88.6 million last year.

"This success is not only reflected in figures but also in the transformation of coffee growing areas, where avocado offers a new growth opportunity. Avocado is now the second most sold export fruit, after bananas, consolidating Colombia as a key player in highly demanding markets," stated Javier Diaz Molina, president of Analdex.

"This growth is due to the entry into production of new avocado plantings. In addition, weather conditions in 2024 were more favorable, and improved agricultural practices contributed to further growth and strengthening of our export position," stated Sergio Plata Ortiz, country manager of Baika Colombia.

The sector's growth leads to a higher demand for labor in the fields, he added. "We will also need more inspectors to ensure the quality and packaging of exports so that avocados reach international markets in optimal condition.

China is seen as a potential market for export. However, the long distance poses a challenge because the avocados do not always arrive in good condition. To deal with this issue, Analdex recommends investing in stronger avocado varieties or innovative technologies that extend shelf life during transport. Moreover, demand for avocado oil is growing steadily, stated Maydenrocío Rojas, supply chain manager at Natural Harvest. This product is sent to the United States, Mexico, Spain, Italy, Portugal, and South Korea.
