Erik-Jan Thur, Marni Fruit:

"Growing customer demand for smaller tangerine sizes"

The Spanish citrus season is coming to an end at Marni Fruit. "We are still receiving some late oranges, such as Navel Lane. Prices for the larger sizes range from 12 to 12.50 euros, mid-sized oranges are between 11 and 11.50 euros, and smaller sizes are selling for 10 to 10.50 euros," says Erik-Jan Thur. "However, prices depend on the supply from Egypt. A large number of Egyptian oranges are on the way, particularly in smaller sizes. Prices for a good class II batch range from 9 to 10 euros, while class I oranges are priced between 10 and 11 euros."

"We are now quite far through the Spanish leaf mandarins, a bit earlier than usual. We are looking back on an incredibly successful leaf mandarin season. The last Nadorcott mandarins from Spain sold at good prices."

"In recent years, we have made the shift to stocking only the larger sizes, with size 82 being the smallest we carry. Personally, I prefer smaller tangerines because they tend to have better flavor, but it is harder to find customers for them. If you go down to sizes 120-130, it becomes difficult to sell them at a good price. Many Spanish suppliers choose to pack smaller sizes into nets for supermarkets, as this often brings in a better price than selling them loose."

"In previous years, we continued a bit longer with the Ortanique variety, but since it is slightly harder to peel, my customers prefer Moroccan Nadorcott instead. Over the past few weeks, we have received several containers of these, and we will continue with them for another week or two. The quality is good, and they are selling well. Prices for Nadorcott mandarins range from 12 to 12.50 euros for the larger sizes, while the smaller sizes (120-count) are around 10 to 10.50 euros."

Flawless sales week
"The lemon market is quite calm. Occasionally, there is a brief price increase to the 15-17 euro range, but the standard quality, which most buyers prefer, is generally priced between 12 and 14 euros. This week has been somewhat slow in sales due to holidays in several countries, which has put some pressure on order volumes," Erik-Jan concludes.
