Banana production in Piura not affected by rains in northern Peru

The heavy rains in northern Peru, particularly in Tumbes and the highlands of Piura, have caused concern in the agricultural sector; however, banana production in the Piura region, which represents between 80 and 85% of the national total, has not been affected so far.

According to local reports, rainfall in Piura has been recorded mainly in the highland areas, which have suffered some crop losses due to the high intensity of the rains. Meanwhile, on the coast, where the majority of bananas and mangoes intended for export are produced, rainfall has been sporadic and not very heavy.

Although climatic indicators are pointing to a possible increase in rainfall in March, there is still uncertainty about the magnitude of the impact on agriculture in the region. In contrast, in Tumbes, which is closer to the equator, the rains have been more intense, causing crop losses and damage to road infrastructure.

It's worth noting that the Piura region went through a period of prolonged drought between October and December last year, which caused the plantations to suffer hydric stress due to the reduction of water reserves. The situation has now changed after some rains were recorded, although there is no reason for concern for agricultural producers on the coast.

The agro-export sector is keeping a close eye on the weather situation, as any changes in rainfall could take a toll on the production and export logistics of key crops in the region.
