Texas onion harvest begins with stable yields and strong demand

The 2025 onion harvest in Texas commenced, showing promising initial indicators. Harvest activities started mid-February, with the peak period projected to continue until mid-April. Weather conditions varied, with a warm and dry November-December, overcast January, and a cold spell. By mid-February, the weather stabilized, creating favorable conditions for onion growth. Yield forecasts suggest consistent volumes and improved size, aligning with prior years.

In 2024, the U.S. onion crop's total value reached $2.00 billion, marking a 13% increase from 2023. Utilized production recorded 76.8 million cwt, with 54.9 million cwt for the fresh market and 1.10 million tons for processing.

Market impact indicates stable harvest schedules, ensuring a continuous supply from mid-February to June, reducing potential disruptions. Production costs may rise by 5-10% due to labor, irrigation, and fertilizer expenses. Demand remains robust, supporting Texas onions in fulfilling consumer needs at competitive prices.
