The Primofiori lemon season is currently going through a "complicated" moment because there has been a drop in supply and quality is not as expected, stated the CEO of Sixto Lemon, Bartolomé Rodríguez. "As a result, prices have increased to the point that we have been buying lemons in the fields at a higher price than the selling price to our clients, after adding all the costs."
"Right now the price on the field ranges from 40 to 45 cents per kilo, which makes it very difficult to maintain a profit margin."
"There were a lot of losses due to the frost, drought, and pests, which affected weakened trees more. This also affected the fruit's quality, which was not suitable for sale. In addition, consumption in February wasn't as good as we expected. We hope the Verna season will have higher sales to improve our profit margin. However, according to many farmers, the quality problems could also continue with the Verna lemon, which will have a much shorter season than last year," Bartolomé stated.
"Forecasts are that this year, the Verna season will start even earlier than last year, which means we will also finish earlier, around June, and that we'll also have to start working with the Eureka lemon from South Africa earlier," he added.
