France and Morocco strengthen their position as key suppliers to the Spanish market

In 2024, France and Morocco consolidated their positions as the Spanish market's first two largest suppliers by volume, with 1.1 million tons (+19%) and 455,086 tons (+4%), respectively. Spain mainly imports potatoes from France. Potatoes account for 86% of all imports from this country. In contrast, Spain purchases a variety of products from Morocco. Peppers, green beans, and tomatoes are the three most imported products, accounting for 49% of the total purchased from the Maghrebi country.

France continues to be the Spanish market's leading supplier in terms of volume and it has strengthened its presence with a 19% increase in imports, totaling 1.1 million tons, and a 16% increase in value compared to 2023, totaling 523 million euros.

In 2024 Spain purchased 942,775 tons of potatoes from France, i.e. 22% more than in the previous year and 86% of the total volume of French products imported by Spain. Potato purchases amounted to 365 million euros, 22% more than in the previous year and 70% of the total value.

Morocco has strengthened its position as the Spanish fruit and vegetable market's second-largest international supplier in terms of volume, with a 4% increase in 2024 and 455,806 tons. However, it is the leading supplier in terms of value, with 1 million euros in 2024, 16% more than in 2023. Vegetable imports amounted to 291,047 tons worth 422 million euros, up 22% in volume and 15% in value. Fruit imports stood at 164,752 tons (-18%) and 619 million euros (+16%) in 2024.

Peppers, green beans, and tomatoes accounted for 77% of Spanish vegetable imports from Morocco in 2024 and 49% of fruit and vegetable imports from the Maghreb country, according to data from the General Directorate of Customs and Excise, processed by Fepex.

Pepper purchases amounted to 88,360 tons (+31% more than in 2023) worth 102 million euros (+25%), green bean purchases stood at 68,886 tons (+12%) worth 156 million euros (+10%), and tomato purchases amounted to 66,625 tons (+15) worth 84 million euros (+1%).

However, imports from Morocco are highly diversified and the country is importing a higher volume of products it produces, such as cucumbers and zucchini. Cucumber imports from Morocco stood at 15,294 tons (+39%) worth 18 million euros (+37%), and zucchini imports at 12,449 tons (+15%) and 12 million euros (+26%).

Fruit imports in 2024 stood at 164,752 tons and 619 million euros. Avocado imports stand out with 35,449 tons (+56%) worth 97 million euros (+49%).
