Plantis Group: "The product is sold in bundles of 250g and 500g"

Asparagus: Italy has yet to come into play

It is the time of the asparagus, but there are still a few on the market. It is a spring crop that, despite a very tight harvesting calendar, brings good results every year for the companies that produce and sell it.

Claudio D'Alba, CEO of the Plantis Group, an Apulian company that exports fruit and vegetables mainly to the Baltic and Scandinavian countries: "We are still in the very early stages of the campaign. Spain started earlier and better than us. They have larger quantities and slightly lower prices. In addition to the products on the markets, there are those from overseas that arrive in Europe with more aggressive and competitive prices, especially at the end of the season, although operators still prefer the European product."

"The quantities we deliver to customers are not high, but there is no lack of interest in the crop, with prices now hovering around €7-8/kg. We will continue to work with the asparagus until the end of May. In the next few weeks, as temperatures and daylight hours increase, we will have to process at least double the amount of asparagus," he adds.

Plantis Group works with 6 producers located between Foggia and Viterbo that supply the product from March until the beginning of summer. "At the moment we send 5-6 pallets a week", continues D'Alba. For each customer, we send 200 to 300 boxes of asparagus in bunches of 250 and 500 grams, all of which are uniformly packed. Asparagus is now a very popular product, whereas only a few years ago it was considered a niche product. As temperatures become milder and more enjoyable, consumption will tend to increase, also thanks to the great desire of families to be outdoors. In fact, in the north of Europe, it is common to eat asparagus grilled on the barbecue."
