Wouter van der Beek, Brown Export:

"Farmers still holding onions are a tough bunch"

The onion market is currently difficult to get moving. "We're all a bit stuck together. Market prices are creeping up towards the €20 mark. But farmers are busy in the fields and don't have the time or inclination to sell their onions, while bale prices are only falling," observes Wouter van der Beek of Bruin Export.

"Time will sort that out, but farmers and buyers will need to reconnect. Personally, I believe there are far fewer onions than most people think, but exports will need to increase—otherwise, we'll face another month of stagnant trade. It's a case of supply and demand just not aligning yet," says the exporter.

"The lower quality lots have all found buyers by now. Bale prices range between 17 and 20 cents, but the finer sizes are especially nearly impossible to sell. Everyone is looking for nice, large, golden onions. But farmers know that too, and those who still have onions available are the more resolute ones," says Wouter.

"Sales are mainly focused on Europe. Ramadan ends later this month, which might still create some opportunities for exports to Africa, although the outlook there isn't very promising yet. Demand for red onions is also starting to pick up slightly, but that market remains sluggish, with the lower end holding prices down. That said, there are signs the market is beginning to improve. Overall, I believe there are definitely opportunities, but we shouldn't let them pass us by."
