London Gateway expansion to create UK’s largest container port

Construction work to expand London Gateway is set to begin in May, following regulatory approval for a £1 billion project that aims to establish the facility as the UK's largest container port.

The project, led by DP World, will involve the addition of two new 400-metre all-electric berths and a second rail terminal. Once completed, the expanded port—part of the Thames Freeport—will be able to accommodate six of the world's largest container ships and will be equipped with Europe's tallest quay cranes.

The expansion is expected to take four years to complete and is intended to increase capacity and strengthen the UK's maritime infrastructure. It is anticipated to generate over 1,000 construction jobs during the development phase and 400 permanent positions upon completion.

Regulatory approval was secured through collaboration with Thurrock Council and the UK Government's Marine Management Organisation. The investment plan was first announced in October 2024 at the UK Government's International Investment Summit.

UK Minister of State for Investment, Baroness Poppy Gustafsson, visited the London Gateway site to discuss the project's scope and its potential economic impact, including job creation and increased logistics capacity.

DP World representatives have stated that the expansion aligns with broader national goals to support economic growth and enhance supply chain resilience. The project is also part of ongoing efforts to develop the Thames Freeport as a key hub in the UK's trade and logistics network.
