Egyptian potato exports maintain their upward trend of the last three years, with a remarkable increase in exports to Russia among other countries. Despite strong demand, prices are falling, according to Amr Kadah, export manager at Fruit.Farm.

The exporter says, "We have witnessed a steady increase in potato exports. In 2024, exports at the national level reached 1.1 million tonnes, 200 thousand tonnes more than the previous year and 400 thousand tonnes more than the year before. Similarly, we expect a 10-15% increase in exports in 2025. The potato ecosystem in Egypt is buoyant and stable, with three seasons every year, a steady increase in acreage, and the adoption of the most popular varieties on the market. This is not without challenges, not least the cost of production, which has doubled this year compared with last."

According to Kadah, demand for Egyptian potatoes has improved this season as markets expand. He adds, "Our traditional markets are maintaining strong demand, to which new markets such as Tajikistan and the Balkan countries are now opened. This season has witnessed the return of a major market, Russia, which has resumed potato imports from Egypt with reduced customs duties in a bid to curb rising food prices in the Russian market. This year, Egyptian shipments account for around half of Russia's potato imports."
"Egyptian potato shipments are reaching various markets, mainly Spain, the Netherlands, Eastern Europe, the Balkans and Russia. Gulf markets such as Saudi Arabia and Kuwait are also pulling large volumes, as are African markets," Kadah continues.

"Despite strong demand and rising production costs, prices are very low compared to last year due to increased supply and the expansion of cultivated areas in Egypt this season. The drop is spectacular, reaching 30 to 40%. Prices change every week, depending also in varieties, but are currently averaging USD 250-320/ tonne FOB," the exporter concludes.
