Azerbaijan to begin cultivating German grape variety

Azerbaijan has begun the process of cultivating the Calardis Blanc grape variety, developed by the Geilweilerhof Institute for Grape Breeding in Germany. According to the director of the Scientific Research Institute of Viticulture and Winemaking under the Ministry of Agriculture of Azerbaijan, Vugar Salimov, 100 saplings of this variety have already been sent to the Shamakhi region.

Specialists will examine the plant's adaptation to local conditions, including rainfed agriculture, resistance to pests and diseases, and tolerance to drought and high temperatures. If results meet expectations, Calardis Blanc may be recommended for cultivation on farms across the country.

The variety was developed through the crossbreeding of Calardis Musque and Seyve Villard. It is known for its white berries and high resistance to sunburn and fungal diseases. According to researchers, the use of this grape could reduce the need for fungicides by up to 80%. It is suitable for both table and sparkling wine production.

Salimov also noted that global warming and climate change have led to lower precipitation levels and more frequent droughts, resulting in crop losses of up to 50% during the driest years. In response, Azerbaijani researchers are focusing on the development of drought-tolerant grape varieties, improved irrigation systems, and water-saving technologies.

Work is ongoing to identify growing methods and protective measures that support sustainable viticulture under stress conditions.
