Autumn deliveries are already being planned

Significant growth for Cardoncelli mushrooms in Italy

We have recently started the production of substrate for Cardoncelli mushrooms (Pleurotus eryngii), an agri-industrial process that will end in June with substrates that will not only be delivered to our growers from August, but will also be grown in our facilities," says Filippo Lupo of AgriFunghi, Montalbano Jonico (province of Matera, region of Basilicata), a company that produces and sells substrate and fresh mushrooms all year round, a feat made possible by by the relocation of vegetation to the mountains during the warmer months of the year.

The Cardoncello mushroom is the core business of this company, with a continuous investment in machinery and equipment. The manager continues: "The company's growth continues unabated. Our sales channels primarily consist of growers, agricultural product dealers, wholesale markets, hobbyists, and supermarkets, in addition to Italian producers' organizations and other operators within the sector. We have expanded our greenhouses, equipped with shading nets for summer and air-conditioning systems to ensure continuity for our customers, and last but not least, we have installed a large photovoltaic system to reduce our considerable energy costs, at a time of great uncertainty regarding the replacement of fossil fuels."

The harvest season is now in its final stages. "The mild temperatures experienced during the preceding autumn and winter have contributed to the sustained productivity of the traditional greenhouses. Consequently, climatic conditions are conducive to optimal mushroom development and growth, resulting in mushroom farms operating at nearly 90% of their maximum capacity. In approximately 10 days, a decline in supply is anticipated, which will result in an increase in sales prices for Cardoncelli mushrooms, coinciding with the Easter holidays. Current wholesale market quotations are in the range of €5.50 to €6 per kilogram. The restaurant and catering sector is currently expressing a significant demand for these products."
