Taiwan's satellite tech fights banana fungus in Guatemala and Belize

Experts from the Taiwan Space Agency (TASA) are utilizing satellite technology to address the Fusarium Tropical Race 4 (TR4) fungus, which endangers banana and plantain crops in Guatemala and Belize. This initiative was highlighted at the 2024 International Forum on Applied Technology in Musacae, Guatemala, demonstrating the application of satellite remote sensing for disease monitoring.

As the leading banana exporter globally, Central America, with Guatemala and Belize at the forefront, faces a significant threat from Fusarium TR4, capable of causing up to 100% yield loss. Chang Li-yu, Deputy Director of TASA's Satellite Data Group, detailed the use of the FORMOSAT-5 satellite in this effort. By measuring the reflection of near-infrared light from plants, FORMOSAT-5 aids in assessing crop health and growth. Over three years, this technology has effectively managed Fusarium TR4's spread in both countries, marking a new benchmark in satellite analysis for combating banana diseases and pests.
