US: Orange juice sales continue to fall

US orange juice retail sales continue to slide as more consumers turn their backs on the ordinarily popular drink, due to high prices.

Total domestic retail sales of orange juice fell 4.8% in terms of volume and 2.1% in terms of revenue for the four weeks ended Sept. 29, versus the same period in 2011.

The average price of orange juice has climbed 17 cents from the same period last year.

Sales of from concentrate orange juice fell most sharply - down 10.1% in terms of volume from a similar four-week period a year earlier, despite prices shedding 0.5% to $4.98 a gallon.

Revenue from sales of reconstituted orange juice was still down 10.5% from a similar four-week period a year earlier.

On the other hand, sales of not-from-concentrate juice rose 0.1% in terms of volume despite the price-per-gallon rising 3.2% to $7.31 for the four weeks ended Sept. 29. That means revenue for that juice actually rose 3.3% over the past four weeks from a similar period a year earlier.

Industry analysts say that consumers who spend extra money on not from concentrate juice are not so easily deterred from their purchases as those who tend to buy the lower cost, from concentrate variety.
