IF Europe focused on IQF mangoes but open to expanding to the fresh market

"The Edward is a perfect variety for Peru's early mango season"

International Food Europe (IFE), based in the Netherlands since 2021, specializes in importing IQF mangoes and avocados from Peru and other countries. Those are processed into dices, chunks, slices, halves, purees, and pulp. That activity is complemented by frozen strawberry and blueberry imports.

The Peruvian mango season is about to start, but that, says Business Development Manager Sebastian Cordi, will be very challenging, thanks to El Niño. "The mangoes are the most affected because it coincides with the flowering period. Temperatures in Peru averaged 2-3°C higher than last year. That greatly impacted yields during the mango flowering period. Fewer flowers means less fruit. Growers expect to harvest as much as 50-60% fewer mangoes. With the expected rainfall, that will mainly affect Kent mangoes," he says.

International Food Europe B.V (IFE) carries Edward mangoes from October to December, Kents follow from December to March. "Edward is an ideal variety for the early Peruvian mango season. They have a similar brix level to Kents but with a slightly yellower skin and slightly more sour flavor. For IQF, however, the differences are minor. El Niño also hits the Edward less hard; this variety is more resistant to it. We therefore advise our customers to promote Edward mangoes as an alternative to Kent."

The company supplys to different countries in Europe like Germany, Spain, Belgium, Poland, France and also the UK. It receives all its containers in the Netherlands, where it holds its stock, too. "The products arrive already processed. Our suppliers has invested in mango and avocado processing facilities and processes bananas and maracuja into pulp and puree."

"We're confident about the fruit segment. So to mitigate all the effects of the El nino phenomenon, we will offer products from other countries like Vietnam and Egypt to supply our clients round-year.

Our biggest challenge is introducing our retail brands to supermarkets. We also want to expand our portfolio further and are definitely open to taking steps into the fresh mango and avocado markets," Sebastian concludes.
