A container of 20 tons of Hass avocados that was grown by small farmers in the province of Limatambo, Cusco, and that is valued at 30,000 euro arrived in the Netherlands for distribution in the European Union. According to Sierra Exportadora, this is the first of 15 containers acquired by the Israeli company Mehadrin Tnuport Export.
The small producers of Limatambo's Avocado Producers that sent this container through the Agricola Matilda Productions company received technical assistance from the Sierra Exportadora via its National Fruit Trees and Hass Avocado Program so they could implement the GlobalGAP protocol that ensures they comply with Good Agricultural Practice (GAP).
They were also trained in harvesting and post-harvest management, with an emphasis on measuring dry matter to determine the optimal time to harvest the fruit, which guarantees optimum product quality.
75 families will benefit from the export of the 15 containers of Hass avocados dispatched the Mehadrin Tnuport Export company.
The container was dispatched from the port of Callao on March 11 and arrived to the Netherlands a few days ago, as planned. In total, the producers will export 300 tons of Hass avocado.
The CEO of Sierra Exportadora, Alfonso Velasquez Tuesta, said this shipment was a major step for small producers of Limatambo, as they would materialize their first shipment to the Netherlands.
The small producers took advantage of the commercial window that Peru has to cover the lower supply of Hass avocado from other producing countries to the EU (December-March), a period in which they get the best prices.
