Peruvian Hass avocados would be entering the Argentine market before July because the phytosanitary process is well advanced and the Argentine Government is willing to receive the domestic products, said the head of the National Service of Agrarian Health (Senasa), Jorge Barrenechea.
He also stated that the southern nation was reopening its market after the change of government and the assumption of Mauricio Macri, something that benefited Peru considerably due to the number of products they have to offer.
"In the case of avocado, the phytosanitary issue is quite advanced. It is almost closed and it is in a process of internal adaptation. We've spoken to the president of the Argentina health authority and we believe the market will be open before July," Barrenechea stated.
In this regard, he said, Argentina's new administration was unlocking many internal measures "and we are basically waiting for the best time to publish the standard (which authorizes the entry of Peruvian avocados)," stated Argentina's health authority.
"Authorities are talking with producers and merchants to find a balance that allows the entry of Peruvian avocado to Argentina. We want this product to enter the country," he added.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (Minagri) the country went from exporting 18,700 tons of avocado worth 23 million dollars ten years ago to 179,000 tons worth more than 306.9 million dollars in 2014, which means the value of exports increased by 13 times in just a decade.
So far, Peru's Hass avocado reaches 58 countries worldwide, amongst which the United States, the United Kingdom, Vietnam, Canada and other nations stand out.
