The crisp Minnan plums are generally harvested in late March or April, which is why they are nicknamed 'third month crisp plums'. The sales season for this crisp plum already began two weeks ago. Manager Zhu, spokesperson for Zhangzhou Shangpin Fresh Supply Chain Co., Ltd. recently talked about the price and retail conditions of the crisp plums.
"The crisp plum is a characteristic product of the Minnan area in Fujian province. The plum is sour and crisp. Consumers with a preference for sour flavors enjoy this plum a lot. The orchards in Minnan enjoyed an abundant harvest this year. Buyers purchase the crisp plums from production areas in daily volumes of more than several ten thousand kg," said manager Zhu.
"The crisp plums are only on the market for a brief period. The peak of the sales season usually lasts only one month. The purchase price of average-quality crisp plums is currently around 1.5 yuan [0.21 USD] per 0.5 kg, while the price of top-quality crisp plums is around 2 yuan [0.28 USD] per 0.5 kg. The wholesale price is around 4 yuan [0.56 USD] per 0.5 kg. The price is more or less the same as around this time last year."
"As for the retail conditions, the crisp plum entered the market during the last stage of the severe isolation measures that were in place to limit the spread of COVID-19. The distribution of crisp plums suffered from these measures and our offline sales volume declined in comparison with last year. Customers collectively switched to online shopping. Our online sales volume increased by 20%-30% in comparison with the same period last year," explained manager Zhu.
"One advantage of the crisp plum is its relatively long shelf-life. This also means that we can deliver our crisp plums to any location within China and still guarantee that the product quality and flavor are excellent. However, taking the additional transport obstacles into account, we have started to differentiate between nearby customers and clients further away. We select the plums based on how ripe they are and supply the ripest plums to customers within the province because we can guarantee that the plums arrive within a day. We deliver the plums that are not as ripe to customers in other provinces because we know the plums will spend some time on the road."
In addition to crisp plums, Zhangzhou Shanpin Fresh Supply Chain also sells loquat, green jujube, star fruit, and guava. These are all characteristic seasonal fruits from the Minnan area in Fujian.
