Wholesale onion prices have nearly doubled in in India over the past three months; supply has reduced because of excess rainfall in southern India, there were supply chain disruptions due to the lockdown and there were more distress sales by growers.
At the benchmark Lasalgaon wholesale market, prices touched Rs16 per kg (€0.18) on Monday. In some other markets, prices were even higher.
Meanwhile, the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation (Nafed) has procured onions in order to ensure price stabilisations. Nafed had set a target of procuring 100,000 tonnes of onions in 2020, which has nearly been met. Nafed has directly procured another 40,000 tonnes of onions from Nashik district.
