Chinese cherry industry is quickly catching up with imported cherries

This year's first Chinese cherries from Dalian have recently arrived at Beijing Xinfadi wholesale Market. The Dalian cherries officially start the domestic cherry season. Data shows that Wanfangdian county in Dalian produces around 45 thousand tons of cherries per year. Almost 12 thousand tons are destined for the market in Beijing. That is an increase of 20% in comparison with the 10 thousand tons of last year. In addition to Beijing, Wanfangdian also supplies wholesale markets in Shenyang and Jiaxing.

Workers select cherries

"The cherries currently on the market are mainly the Meizao variety. The price is more or less the same as last year. The overall conditions are better than previous season. The production volume declined, but the product quality improved. In addition, the Chilean cherry season officially came to an end around Chinese Spring Festival [12 February, 2021] and the product quality of imported cherries was not great that late in the season. The Dalian cherries are somewhat early this year and arrive exactly when the market is starving for cherries." This is according to Mr. Wenpo, chairman of the board of Beijing Runfuyuan Trade Co., Ltd.

Wanfangdian is located at 39 degrees north, at the heart of the fruit production region that surrounds the Bohai sea. This region is well known for excellent weather conditions. Wanfangdian has been known as the 'hometown of fruit' for a very long time. The county is a key region for both the open-field cherry industry in north China and the greenhouse cherry industry. The cherries from greenhouses in this region generally enter the Chinese market ahead of cherry varieties from other regions. The season usually begins in February and lasts until May. Furthermore, open-field cherries from Dalian stay on the market longer than cherries from other regions. Open-field cherries from Dalian are available until July.

According to Mr. Liu Wenpo, chairman of the board, "the Chinese cherry industry is rapidly developing in terms of production volume and product quality. There is barely a difference between domestic cherries and imported cherries. Production areas in Hebei, Shandong, Shanxi, and Henan have begun to construct installations for the production of greenhouse cherries. These areas enthusiastically introduce cultivation technology from Dalian as well as suitable cherry varieties. They only lag behind Dalian in terms of overall surface area devoted to cherry plantation."
