The Jiaxing Fruit Market was established in 1992. After more than 20 years of development, it is already the largest domestic fruit distribution center in east China. More recently the market has also expanded its volume of imported fruits. The Jiaxing Market team hopes to attract even more significant imported fruit brands to set up stalls in their market. At the same time, the team will continue to develop the distribution of top-quality domestic fruit to the international market.
Mr. Ying Jianjun is a spokesperson for the Jiaxing Fruit Market Haiguangxing Premium Fruit Trade Center. He was kind enough to reflect on trends in the last year.
According to him: "In 2020 our (Haiguangxing Trade Center) trade volume increased by 15% in comparison with 2019 despite the outbreak of Covid-19. Our trade volume last year reached a total of 30,000 shipping containers. Most of the growth was in East Asian products that arrived overland. The sales conditions of western products such as Egyptian oranges, Chilean cherries, and Australian plums, were less than ideal for a number of different reasons.
However, as the Covid-19 pandemic is gradually brought under control, we can see the market slowly recover its strength. We also plan to cultivate the trade in western products and hope to attract more visiting traders who deal in western products," said manager Ying.
In addition to expanding the scale of their trade operations, the Jiaxing Market team also hopes to set up a comprehensive platform that supports modernization in the entire supply chain from beginning to end. This platform will rely on big data and provide traders with accurate services.
"For example, we launched our online platform called 'Jiaxing Fruit Index Online'. This is the first online fruit index in the world. The data on this platform is renewed in real time. Visiting traders can go online and check the data for any kind of fruit any time they want and immediately have an overview of trends and market predictions."
"Although there are a dozen first-grade wholesale fruit markets in the country, we can easily distinguish four wholesale markets that stand out in terms of fruit market share, distribution capacity, and relevant support facilities. These markets include Gaobeidian Xinfadi Market in north China, Shanghai Huizhan Market and Jiaxing Market in east China, and Guangzhou Jiangnan Market in south China. These four markets supply three major regions of China. They each rely on their own ports and service their own consumer market," said manager Ying.
"The pressure on agricultural markets is growing, but this is not necessarily about competition between agricultural markets. It is mostly the competition between agricultural markets on the one side and other retail channels, such as e-commerce platforms and direct purchases from production areas, on the other side. The agricultural markets each have their own unique characteristics. We think the agricultural markets should develop their unique strengths to further stimulate the growth of China's fruit industry."
According to manager Ying: "The development of China's fruit industry requires positive competition and cooperation on all sides. That is why we began cooperating with two leading wholesale markets in Shanghai and Guangzhou in 2018. Together we set up the Haiguangxing Premium Fruit Trade Center in Jiaxing. This trade center is primarily designed for import and export of premium fruit. We hope to use this platform to put the premium Chinese fruit in Jiaxing Market on the world map," said Mr. Ying.
"In addition, in August of this year, we will organize the first session of the 'Shanghai International Fruit Exposition' in Shanghai. Not only will the visiting traders in Jiaxing Market enthusiastically join in, but we will also cooperate with Gaobeidian Market in Hebei. This will attract visiting traders from north China to our exposition. we combine the market and the exposition in the hope that we can expand the influence of China's fruit industry and further advance fruit trade."
