Magnet MED is the evolution of trapping for fruit fly biocontrol

Trapping for the biocontrol of the Mediterranean fruit fly (Ceratitis capitata), one of the most damaging pests for fruit trees and responsible for heavy losses in the sector each season, has evolved with Magnet MED, from Suterra.

As product development manager Daniel Casado explains in the following video, Magnet MED is not a trap per se; it works more like bait. The surface of Magnet MED is impregnated with an insecticide and contains a powerful attractant that causes the fruit fly to land on it. The fly wanders across the surface and upon contact, dies.  

The disadvantage of trapping systems is that the fly must find a hole to get into the trap, get the insecticide and then not be able to escape, Daniel says. "That's not so easy to achieve. With Magnet MED, we eliminate those barriers."

Suterra recommends using Magnet MED before the fruit ripening in order to control the fruit fly population and prevent the efforts made during the season from being jeopardized, ensuring effective protection against the pest for half a year. In addition, the product tackles only fruit flies. All useful fauna is respected, thereby ensuring some ecological balance.
