Pears became popular during the pandemic and prices at origin increased rapidly

Entering March and April, the increasing price of fresh pears in China has attracted much attention, and the current trading in pear-producing areas is hot. The price is almost rising every day. Pear farmers and traders are optimistic about the future market and only a portion of them sell to the direct market to ensure the supply. There are also some farmers and traders speculating in the production area, hoping that the future market will provide higher returns.

Looking at the wholesale market, its prices are increasing, according to the price monitoring of China Fruit Circulation Association. As of April 1, the price of Huangguan pear, Ya pear, and Snow pear on wholesale market was 5.83 yuan/kg, 4.12 yuan/kg, 3.92 yuan/kg, an increase of 5.42%, 0.98%, 5.09% respectively. The price of Huangguan pears and Snow pears rose significantly.

Judging from the market situation, although important sales areas such as Shanghai and Jiaxing have been affected by the pandemic, which blocked the entry of fresh pears to the market, the sales volume of the surrounding markets like Jinhua has doubled. After Changchun went under lockdown, sales in the Shenyang market increased.

The reasons for the increasing price of fresh pears are as follows. First, the total amount of remaining inventory is small. Second, seasonal factors have driven up prices. Third, compared with other fruits, fresh pears have a relatively low price, and consumers are more willing to buy cost-effective fruits, due to limited purchasing power. Fourth, if outbreaks of COVID happen more frequently in many provinces across the country, pears are supposed to be helpful to the lungs as they are rich in vitamin C which can greatly improve human immunity. Pears can be steamed, boiled, frozen, and juiced, which means they are a good product for keeping people healthy during the pandemic.

In the future, the price of fresh pears will keep increasing. This will boost the industry's confidence and stimulate the enthusiasm of pear farmers and traders. However, there are many uncertainties in the current situation of pandemic, and a large number of fruits will be listed in large quantities in April and May. Whether the subsequent price of pears will rise, fall or soar is still not known.
