Days of rain in Shandong damage potatoes in fields

The rainy season in Shandong came a fortnight earlier than in previous years. The early arrival of the rainy season can be said to "stifle" the field potatoes in Qingdao and its surrounding production areas.

It has been nearly 4 months since potatoes in the Shandong production area were on the market in early March. During this period, the supply of potatoes has undergone a normal transition from greenhouse supply to field supply. Before the rain, the field supply sources in various places had just been on the market, and the cold storage work had just begun.

Since June 24, many places in Shandong have experienced heavy rain, especially in Qingdao, which is the main potato-producing area. At present, the rainfall in Shandong's main potato supply producing areas has continued for several days and the real-time rainfall is relatively large. If high temperatures return after the rain, the rotting of the crop soaked in water will be accelerated and the supply will face the problems of excessive moisture, difficult transportation, and a more cautious approach to purchasing.

It is expected that the end of this rainfall will greatly reduce the value of potato products unearthed in the future, and the probability of some sources of goods being resold to starch factories will increase, and potato farmers will suffer heavy losses.

It is understood that outside of Shandong, most of the potato seedlings in the first cropping area in the north are growing well. From May to early June, drought is more common in various production areas, and the rainfall in each production area has been uneven since mid-June. At present, there are still about 2 months before the large-scale market launch of potatoes in the first crop area.
