The mango-producing area in Panzhihua City, Sichuan Province, China, has unique terrain and climate suitable for growing mango. The mangoes produced in this area have the characteristics of less fiber, a sweet and fragrant taste, a smooth texture and are rich in nutrients. It takes "Panzhihua Mango" as its regional public brand and sells it in domestic and foreign markets.
In the past, Panzhihua mangoes were exported through third-party trading companies. However, in the last two years, local mango companies have begun to contact overseas companies and try to export to overseas markets on their own.
"The exports are strong this year. With strong support from the local government, it is estimated that more companies will participate in self-export next year." Mr. Xu Tianrong of Panzhihua Xiguo Agriculture Co., Ltd told Freshplaza.
"We are still cooperating with third-party trading companies, but we are also exploring the route of independent trade, including the overall process, business negotiation, exploring the market and the habits of buyers, etc. At present, export quality control and procedures can be completed independently by ourselves. Exploring independent trading requires some time, but self-export can increase the right to speak independently and leave a more complete record of export data. Last year, we tried to export a small number of samples to South Korea, Russia, and other markets and received feedback. This year, our export market will be Russia, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Canada, etc.”
"The export market has a lot of space and favorable policies, and now the daily shipments are quite large. Among them, the markets of Russia, Singapore, and Malaysia need high-quality fruit. In particular, Russia's demand is large. Although Vietnam produces its own mangoes, Panzhihua's mango season can just make up for the window period of the Vietnamese mango season, especially during the period of August to September. The transportation requirements to the Canadian market are quite high, and the current export volume to the local market is not large. The problem of transportation costs needs to be solved."
The production season of Panzhihua mango is long, from May to December, and there are more than ten varieties. It is now at the end of the production season, and the volumes have reduced. At present, the main high-quality late variety is the Kate mango.
Mr. Xu said: "Mangoes in the later period are more resistant to storage and transportation. There are not many mango varieties on the market at this time, and the competition is reduced. This variety is being exported."
In addition, Mr. Xu also introduced the status of the Panzhihua mango season this year. "It snowed in the production area in March this year, when mangoes were in the flowering and fruiting period. Due to the influence of coldness, mango production was reduced by nearly half this year. The size was large, but the taste was not affected. The 1300-1500 meters altitude area is less affected by frost, and the later mangoes are relatively less affected."
In terms of market reaction, Mr. Xu said that although the production has decreased, the price has not changed much. However, due to the large size of mangoes, the market acceptance is not as good as it used to be. "In the past, mangoes with a single fruit weighted 0.5-1 kg accounted for 60-70%, but this year, the fruits weighted more than 1 kg accounted for 50-60%. Even if the taste is good, it is relatively difficult to sell large mangoes."
Panzhihua Xiguo Agriculture Co., Ltd. is engaged in fruit planting, processing, sales and wholesale, import and export trade, etc. Its main products are mango, pomegranate, dragon fruit, etc. Through the form of local cooperative associations, it has more than 20,000 mu of fruit planting area, and its own cold storage and packaging plant.
