A major breakthrough for SOUK Farms, a Rwandan producer of Hass and Fuerte avocado varieties. Mr. Seun Rasheed, Managing Director of Souk Farms, stated: "Thanks to the support of the National Agriculture Export Board, and IDH (The Sustainable Trade Initiative), we will start our first exports in December 2022 with a first container to Dubai, and a second heading to Europe before end of December.
Avocado exports from Rwanda are expected to increase significantly, from 5,000 MT this season to upwards of 17,000 MT by 2025-2026, through a large-scale planting campaign.
In addition to Avocado, Rwanda is also an emerging supplier of French Beans, Habanero, Bird Eye Chilli, Passion Fruit, Sugar Snaps and Snow Peas to Europe and Middle East. Mr Rasheed credited the rapid growth in Rwandan horticulture exports to the favourable operating environment in Rwanda thanks to very supportive government policies backed by the Government ambition to boost export of horticulture produce.
SOUK Farm’s exports are destined for the Middle East, in particular the United Arab Emirates. The company is also targeting European markets, including the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
As for prices, Mr. Rasheed explained that Rwandan producers are not spared from the global energy crisis, which is affecting the transportation costs. Although production is still profitable, rising costs could entail a corresponding change in prices.
Mr. Seun Rasheed and his sales and marketing team will be exhibiting at multiple exhibitions in 2023: at Fruit Logistica in Berlin, Fruit Attraction in Madrid, World of Perishables in Dubai and Asia Fruit Logistica in Hong Kong.
