Thanks to its geographical location and advanced planting technology, Taiwan is rich in fruits and it is famous for producing pineapples, custard apples, among others. It can basically be self-sufficient in these fruits. Most of the imported fruits cannot be produced locally or can only be produced in small quantities, such as muscat grapes.
In recent years, the popularity of muscat grapes in the Taiwan market has increased year by year, and most of them are imported from Japan. At this stage, the muscat grape production season in Japan is coming to an end. In order to better meet the needs of consumers and extend the supply period, Rock Yen from Fruit Paradise Trading Co., Ltd. set his sights on Korean muscat grapes which are comparable in quality to Japanese muscat grapes. Recently, he shared with FreshPlaza the prospects for this variety in the Taiwan market.
"The muscat grapes supplied in the Taiwan market mainly come from Japan and South Korea, though Japan is the main source. The picking period of muscat grapes in Korea is from the end of July to October, which lasts about 3 months. Under good conditions, the storage period can be as long as 3 - 4 months, which makes the sales period from September to March or April of the following year. Such a long supply window is definitely a big market advantage, especially as the export season in Japan is coming to an end at the moment," Mr. Yen said.
The first batch of imported South Korean muscat grapes by Fruit Paradise Trading will arrive in Taiwan in the near future. When talking about the delivery plan, he said, "We imported a container (20 feet) for the first time this time, and then we will import 1-2 containers of South Korean muscat grapes every week until the Chinese New Year in 2023."
At this stage, the imported grapes on the Taiwan market are mainly American, Chilean, and South African grapes. As far as muscat grapes are concerned, they are mainly imported from Japan.
Relatively speaking, the amount of muscat grapes in South Korea is not large. In South Korea, most muscat grapes are sold domestically, accounting for about 20% of the total. In previous years, they were mainly exported to mainland China, but also to Canada, the United States, and other regions. However, affected by various factors this year, sales to mainland China have been blocked, and the volume originally supplied there is popular in emerging markets now, such as Vietnam and Taiwan.
