Swiss parliamentarian demands that air freighted produce be declared in stores

Parliamentarians in Switzerland, through National Counsellor, Christine Badertscher from the Greens, has demanded that all food arriving by plane must be declared. This is due to these food, including fresh produce, causing a disproportionately high environmental footprint and is according to her not in the interest of sustainable nutrition.

She says with a declaration obligation for air freight, it will create transparency for consumers. She has the support of parliamentarians from different parties who will debate and vote on the proposal.

According to statistics by the Swiss Federal Office of Customs and Border Security the proportion of food imports compared to total consumption is small. about 15 500 tons of food came via air freight in 2021. Fruit and vegetables make out 7 000 tons of this total, only about 1% of all fresh produce imports to the country.
