Bengal growers are increasingly shifting from cauliflower to broccoli

In light of the larger profit margins of the ‘more exotic’ green vegetable, Bengal growers are increasingly shifting from growing cauliflower to broccoli. Most of the broccoli that is consumed in Kolkata is grown in Bhangar land 2 blocks of South 24 Parganas. According to estimates of the state agriculture department, it is now cultivated on around 1,600 hectares, slightly more than the 1,588 hectares devoted to cauliflower.

The shift has to do with supply and demand. Up until some three years ago, the daily broccoli requirement for the city used to be just 1.5 tons. Now, the local requirement has increased to 5 tons per day.
