Erratic showers in parts of Maharashtra have caused damage to the white onion crops, resulting in a rise in prices for this produce in the market. While the market is flooded with red onions and potatoes, the white onions have now started arriving in the APMC market, Vashi, and are priced at around Rs10-12 rupees lower than the previous year.
White onions are grown in limited quantities in regions such as Alibag, Vasai, Nagpur, Nashik, and other places in the state. However, the majority of white onion cultivation is in Gujarat, resulting in higher demand from there.
This year’s erratic rains have caused delays in the white onion harvest, resulting in a slower entry into the market. While regular onion and potato crops are already available, it will take one to two weeks for white onions to hit the market in full swing, traders say.
