The potato farmers of the Kanpur Nagar district have no other option than to dump their crop in open as the cold storage houses of the district have no space. Farmers said that this year's bumper potato crop has resulted in a glut, bringing down the potato prices to Rs 2 -3 per kg. They have demanded that potatoes should be brought under the purview of MSP, so that they can get fair and cost price of their crop. And with no space in the cold storages, they are compelled to throw out their crop.
Still, according to District Horticulture Officer Digvijay Singh there are more than 80 cold storages in the district. He said that the incident wherein 40 sacks of potatoes that were thrown out yesterday in the district's Shivrajpur area will be investigated
