Avocados have recently become one of Tanzania's most popular exports as more farmers participate in what is known as the "green gold."
Tanzania has failed to rank among the top 10 producers globally, despite its output reaching record highs, as much of it is controlled by nations in Central and South America.
With an annual output of 176,045 tons, Kenya is the only African nation in the top 10 producers of avocados, according to the most recent World of Statistics study.
Mexico is the largest producer, producing 1,889,354 tonnes year, followed by the Dominican Republic, Peru, Colombia, Peru, Peru, and Indonesia, which produces 304,938 tonnes annually. Other countries include Brazil (195,492), the United States (172,630), Chile (137,365), and China (122,942 in 10th place).
According to the Tanzania Horticultural Association (TAHA), in 2021, the nation's avocado exports would be 11,237 tonnes, or 510 containers, worth $33 million.
This is a 12.6% increase over revenues in 2020. The Tanzania Private Sector Foundation (TPSF) reports that in 2018, Tanzania sold 7,551 tons to Europe, Africa, and Asia for a total of $8.5 million.
Tanzania is expected to export 15,000 tonnes in 2023, bringing in $45 million in foreign currency, according to TAHA. Tanzania very recently began exporting avocados in 2009.
