Like other North African origins, Egyptian melon and watermelon exporters are patiently waiting for the summer to start in Europe, and the increase in temperatures, favoring the consumption of these fruits.
Mohamed Shahen, of the Egyptian producer Agro Pro, said: "Egyptian volumes of watermelon and melons have increased this year, thanks to good weather conditions, and a strong demand last year that encouraged producers to increase acreage."
"The first harvests are already available, and we are achieving good sales with the Arab markets, especially the Gulf countries, which have a solid demand due to the onset of summer," says the producer.
"But we are still waiting for the European demand for pick up. It is still slow at the beginning of the season, due to the cold temperatures in Europe. The dip in orders is remarkable when compared to the same period last year," adds Shahen.
In terms of price, the producer reports an increase of 15% over last season, despite the slow European demand. He justifies: "There is no part of our production costs that has not increased, and this is the case not only of Egyptian production but also of all other competing origins."
