"The price of domestic fruit is rising, as is the cost of imported fruit"

It has been half a year since the end of the pandemic control. In recent months, overseas businessmen have once again focused their attention on the Chinese market, and the connection between overseas production areas and the domestic market has become more frequent. At present, the market prices of most imported fruits are good, and some believe that they have returned to the pre-pandemic level. Qingdao Guguo Industry Co., Ltd. is a global fruit supply chain company. The manager of the company, Mr. Zhong, introduced an overview of the recent fruit market situation to FreshPlaza.

"After the controls were eased, the confidence of overseas merchants in the domestic market must have increased. After all, China has a huge population base and a vast market. And these merchants are paying more attention to various changes in the Chinese market, such as wholesale markets, e-commerce platforms, and supermarkets, leading them to upgrade their brands and quality, so as to better adapt to the Chinese market.”

"In the domestic market, I think consumption power is gradually recovering, but it is difficult to see a strong recovery in the short term. After the lockdown ended, the market prices of most items were still good, such as Philippine pineapples, Chilean cherries, and Peruvian avocados and red grapes. In addition, the prices of most domestically produced fruits are also high, which makes imported fruits very cost-effective." Zhong said.

"Despite this, some items did not meet expectations, and even suffered serious losses. The market situation for the pineapples and oranges we mainly produce, has not yet returned to the level of before the pandemic. It is hoped that after restaurants/supermarkets gradually return to normal, the current relatively good trend will continue."

When it comes to his views on domestic fruits, Zhong said, "The standardization and scale of domestic fruits are increasing year by year, especially blueberries, dragon fruits, tangerines, and Shine Muscat grapes, which have a great impact on imported fruits. As with avocados, cherries, and durians are also accelerating the optimization of planting and harvesting. However, domestic fruits are very seasonal, so imported fruits still have a great advantage."

After the pandemic, importers and exporters from all over the world will once again visit the Chinese market. In September alone, many large-scale international fruit exhibitions were held.

"After the pandemic, flexibility increased, and exhibitions in various industries are in full swing. The exhibitions of the fruit and vegetable industry are held concentratedly in September. Too many exhibitions will inevitably put a lot of pressure on exhibitors and even visitors in terms of time and energy. I believe that everyone will make choices according to their actual conditions. The Asia Fruit Logistica in Hong Kong is mainly for importers and exporters, and the International Fruit Expo in Guangzhou takes into account the functions of the Asia Fruit Logistica and will also increase the interaction and participation of importers and domestic downstream customers. Moreover, our company also expects to increase brand promotions and market expansion after the pandemic, especially in South China. "

Qingdao Guguo Industry Co., Ltd. will participate in the International Fruit Expo held in Guangzhou from 1-3 September. When talking about the expectations of participating in the exhibition, Zhong said, "I hope that everyone will actively participate and make up for the three-year delay during the pandemic, and make it a grand event in the fruit industry. It will also help our exhibitors to get to know more resources and discover more valuable downstream customers."

"At present, the 2023 International Fruit Expo is currently in the final stage of exhibitor recruitment. After the pandemic, exporters from major production areas around the world can still continue to register," Iris, from the exhibition, added.
