Taiwanese Food and Drug Administration seizes imports of contaminated fruit

Three shipments of fruit imported from Thailand, Japan and the United States have been seized by Taiwanese customs officials for containing excessive levels of pesticides. Fresh mangosteens imported from Thailand, fresh mikans from Japan and fresh cherries from the US were among the 20 products named by the FDA on its weekly list of goods that failed to meet import standards.

The imports will be destroyed or returned to the country of origin, including the 1,402 kilograms of fresh Thai mangosteens, the first batch of the fruit to be intercepted in the last six months, FDA Deputy Director Lin Chin-fu has stated.

Shipments of coriander seed powder, cumin powder, cayenne powder and red paprika powder from the US were also among the substandard imports seized by customs.
