The National Agricultural Co-operative Marketing Federation of India Ltd (Nafed) and the National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India Ltd (NCCF) have procured 290,000 tons of onions so far. The procurement process of these two central agencies is to be completed within the next couple of weeks.
The federal government has set a procurement target of 300,000 tons of summer onions this year through Nafed and NCCF. Last year, the government an onion buffer stock of 250,000 tons through Nafed. This year, the central government also appointed NCCF for procurement.
Over 95% of the total procurement has been done by both agencies so far. Of that, 90% of onions have been procured from Nashik district alone, while the remaining 10% has been procured from other onion-growing pockets like Ahmednagar, Pune and Aurangabad. Nafed officials said they have so far procured around 140,000 tons of onions from onion-growing regions in Maharashtra.
