13th International Mango Symposium, September 29 to October 3, 2023

Malaga will become the mango capital of the world next September

Malaga will host the 13th International Mango Symposium, which will take place between September 29 and October 3, 2023, under the auspices of the International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS). The event will be organized by the Institute of Subtropical and Mediterranean Horticulture La Mayora (IHSM La Mayora), a joint institute of the University of Malaga and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). The symposium will be held at the NH hotel in Malaga, Spain, in the heart of the only area in continental Europe with a significant mango production.

It will bring together internationally recognized experts from both academia and the industry, and it will serve as a stage to exhibit different products and services. It will also allow participation in social events and there will be field tours to learn about the crop's production process on the European continent.

Speakers and presentations
Representatives of the organization have pointed out that there will be a diversity of speakers and presentations at this event, including Dr. Shailendra Rajan, from India, who will talk about "The diversity of Indian mangoes"; Dr. Leonardo Ortega, Research Director of the NMB, will present the paper "The National Mango Board and the U.S. market". For his part, Dr. Yuval Cohen, from Israel, will talk about "Mango breeding for qualitative traits", while Dr. Maria Hilda Perez Barraza will address the "Recent advances in flower induction, fruit development and fruit setting in mango".

Dr. Ping Lu, from Australia, will give a presentation on "The current status of irrigation management in mangoes" and Dr. Ian Bally, also from Australia, will discuss "Rethinking mango production systems towards high density intensive plantations".

Dr. Frédéric Normand from France will speak on "The growth and development of mango trees"; Dr. Noris Ledesma, from the USA, will give a presentation on "Grafting and breeding of Mangifera species. Potential for the future of mango cultivation".

Also, Dr. Steven A. Oosthuyse, from South Africa, will speak about "Sustainability of ultra-high density systems in mango cultivation"; Dr. Victor Galan Sauco will speak on "Mango production and the world mango market", and Dr. Iñaki Hormaza, from Spain, will discuss "Mango reproductive biology".

Lastly, Dr. Ítalo Herbert Lucena Cavalcante, from Brazil, will give a presentation on "The role of biostimulants in mango agronomic management", and Dr. Stanley Freeman, from Israel, will speak about "Mango malformation: epidemiology, host-pathogen interaction and disease management".
