In a positive trend for Swayampurna or self-sufficient Goa in horticulture, cultivating local fruits and vegetables in the state reached a high in the year 2022-23, with volumes growing by 18% and 13% respectively. The increase in production of vegetables such as lady finger, cucumber, ridge gourd among others and fruits like jackfruit, papaya and pineapple is encouraging, as it has been witnessed for the third consecutive year.
Director of agriculture Nevil Alphonso said Goan farmers are growing more fruits and vegetables, as they are assured of sale of the produce to the Goa State Horticulture Corporation (GSHC). The government is prepared to buy all the vegetables and fruits grown in the state. “The GSHC buys local vegetables and fruits at 150% premium on the market price making cultivation very viable to farmers,” Alphonso said.
