Andhra Pradesh produced 5.68 mln tons of banana in 2022-23, the highest number for any state in country. Maharashtra took the second position with 4.96 mln tons. Andhra Pradesh accounted for 16.5 percent of the country's total banana yield during the year.
Andhra Pradesh has been exporting over 40,000 tons of bananas for the last few years. Middle East countries are the major importers of the G9 (Grand Nain) banana variety being planted in Rayalaseema region. The state is also planning to expand its export footprint of bananas to European markets. According to official statistics, Andhra Pradesh has contributed about 20% to the banana basket of India in the last five years.
