‘Tis the season for persimmons and supplies are steady out of California for the fruit. “We are about seven days behind due to a wet and cool spring but I think supplies are good for the upcoming season,” says Justin Bedwell of Bari Produce. While Bari Produce’s grower base is in the Reedley to Fresno area, supply is coming from as far south as Bakersfield.
On both the Fuyu and Hachiya varieties available, right now the fruit is a bit larger compared to last year’s fruit.
As for demand, Bedwell describes it as warm…however, not off the chart. “Consumption of persimmons though will continue to be strong throughout the fall/winter holiday season,” he says. The fruit is often considered a holiday fruit with the Hachiya variety used for baking during the season.
Stronger pricing
Meanwhile pricing is trending downward compared to two weeks ago though that’s not uncommon. “Compared to 2022, pricing seems to be on part or maybe slightly higher,” says Bedwell.
Looking ahead in the persimmon season, supplies are expected to continue to remain steady with the good weather helping maintain dependable harvest schedules. That helps with labor challenges. “The steady harvest versus having fluctuations mean it’s easier to keep the crews working,” adds Bedwell.
The persimmons harvest this season is anticipated to wrap up by the middle of next month.
