Week 49 Fruit Wholesale Market Report

Fewer arrivals of US apples, and small cups of Yunnan blueberries on the market

There have been relatively few air-freighted, high quality Chilean cherries on the market recently and those that do arrive have sold out almost immediately. The prices of such high-quality products (especially branded products) have increased, slightly deviating from the recent market trend. Also, the prices of earlier or lower-quality batches vary, and merchants hope to sell at lower prices. At present, there are fewer small fruits such as single J and 2J. According to merchants, buyers are now more inclined to purchase small fruits because they have better hardness and fewer crack problems. In terms of packaging, the arrival of 2-in-1 and 2.5KG small packages has increased significantly compared with before.

It is understood that the first shipment of Chilean cherries will hit the market around the 10th Dec. Many merchants are waiting for the arrival of sea freight. It is expected that the overall price of cherries will drop again next week. On the other hand, some merchants are also concerned about the quality of the first shipment. Since the first shipment was picked and shipped during the November rains in Chile, the quality of the fruit depends on the post-harvest packaging and processing technology of different manufacturers. Therefore, some merchants estimate that after the shipment arrives, the price of high-quality batches of air cargo may not be affected.

Yunnan blueberries are coming to the market one after another. At present, most of the arrivals are in small cups. One piece of product contains 12 cups of 60 grams, with prices ranging from ¥110-¥140/piece. Due to the small arrival, the fruits are generally in good condition. The price of Peruvian blueberries has dropped slightly recently, and the arrival of Chilean blueberries is less. Some merchants reported that due to weather problems in the Chilean production area, the quality was not ideal.

Imported apples from the United States

The U.S. apple production season started last month. It is understood that prices are relatively high in the early stages of the season, roughly the same as in the past, and the quality is better. Currently, many varieties have arrived, including Gala, Red Delicious, green apples, and Ambrosia. Merchants said that the Gala apple is the best among them because it has a more popular taste and is suitable for a wider range of consumers. However, there have been fewer arrivals recently, and the selling price has increased by about 15% compared to before. There is still a small amount of New Zealand apples arriving in the market. Because it is now at the end of the season, the quality is inferior.

The arrival of red dragon fruit from Vietnam continues to be limited. In recent weeks, the price has remained at ¥100-¥120/piece. Compared with the price of ¥60-¥70/piece in the same period of previous years, it has increased by about 70%. Merchants said that due to economic problems, many Vietnamese fruit farmers have abandoned red dragon fruit and switched to other fruits. The situation that resulted in fewer fruits from origin and higher prices has been going on for some time and has not been resolved. High prices have led to slow sales. Merchants are hoping that shipments of Chilean cherries will arrive mid-to-late this month, which will boost dragon fruit sales. The supply and price of Vietnamese white-flesh dragon fruit are not affected and are close to the usual.
