Due to import permits, the price of peas is low in India

Due to the central government’s import announcement, the price of peas has decreased from about Rs.7,200 to Rs.4,000 per 100 kgs. People in Tamil Nadu and Kerala use peas a lot in their daily food preparation. Three years ago, the central government banned the import of peas. Therefore, due to the increased shortage of peas in India, a lot of peas were being smuggled from Bangladesh, which produces a lot of peas.

Due to the import ban, the price of peas increased not only in Tamil Nadu and Kerala but also in other states. 2,000 workers in pea-based food processing companies were losing their jobs. The Tamil Nadu Food Traders Association recently met Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and the officials and appealed.

The government has completely removed the excise duty on the import of peas and issued a notification and allowed the import of peas a few days ago. But at the same time, the current permission given is of short duration, making it very difficult for the imported peas to arrive within the specified period.
